Environmental Credentials

As many of us do our bit at home to become more environmentally friendly, we at The Palmerston are also committed to a number of schemes and practices to enable us to be a greener business. From recycling to cutting carbon emissions here are some of the ways we are trying to reduce our impact on the planet's resources.

Recycling

With many waste disposal options available to us we have saught to use only those companies that recycle as many of the bi-products of our day to day business as possible.

- Veolia -
Veolia are contracted to deal with most of Southwark's business waste. Through them we are able to recycle our cardboard and glass waste by seperating them before collection. They also dispose of our general waste. www.veoliaenvironmentalservices.co.uk

- Aardvark Recycling -
To further cut our general waste, and as a result quantity of landfill, we are currently involved in a scheme to compost all of our food waste, coffee and tea. www.aardvarkrecycling.org.uk/commercial/home

Cutting Carbon Emissions

It is our aim to source stock from our local and surrounding areas thus cutting the amount of journey time required by road.

Energy Efficiency

Wherever possible in the building we are using energy efficient lightbulbs. Unfortunately due to the age of our current electrical installation and the use of dimmer switches we are not able to use them everywhere but will endeavour to do so as soon as possible. Care is taken to ensure that lights are not left on when not required. Our central heating system is also split over each level and run via thermostats to maintain the temprature.

- eCube -
By the end of 2009 we aim to have eCube systems fitted to all of our refridgeration equipment. Ordinarily when you open a fridge door the sudden rush of warm air reacts with the thermostat which activates the fridge to make it cooler even the core tempreture has not fallen. The eCube restricts the fridge from firing up unnecassarily thus saving up to 30% of the usual electricity used. www.theecube.com

- The London Log Co -
In order to reduce the use of our central heating system over the colder months we have two log fires one in each of our dining rooms. We buy our logs, kindling and brazier (coal) from The London Log Co who maintain sustainable sources for their products.

Water Waste

As with most businesses our water supply is metered therefore it is in our interest, financially, to be prudent with it's use. All of our dish and glass washing equipment is new and use water as efficiently as possible.

‘Ornamentum lacuna’ (Decorative Words)

‘Ornamentum lacuna’ (Decorative Words)

Holly has a degree in Illustration and Animation from Southampton Institute and a diploma in Art and Design from Kent Institute of Art & Design (Maidstone) and is currently working as a freelance video editor.

She has begun a body of mixed media collage. Inspired by organic forms and patterns within nature and Japonisme (the influence of the arts of Japan on the West), she uses small strips and circles of newsprint to create repetitious patterns rendering them in a flat stylish simplicity. Looking closely, text reads ‘Columbo at 3.35 pm’, ‘There is no doubting the sophistication of Rufus Norris’ production of ‘Cabaret’’ or ‘throwing down a fierce atmospheric set of breaks, bass, house and techno’, showing a glimpse of her London life through the mostly monochromatic abstractions.

Holly has exhibited her work only once before at St. Julian’s country club in Sevenoaks in a joint show with Gesina and Clare Triggs called ‘Tambrakje’. www.tambrakje.co.uk
